PaxSpA - Physiotherapy research in axial spondyloarthritis

The Study Design:   Randomised controlled trials within a cohort

What our clinical trial is about:

This clinical trial is registered and has received ethical approval to be undertaken at the Royal United Hospitals Bath and the University of Bath to investigate different physiotherapy interventions in patients with axial spondyloarthritis.

Our first trial will be manual spinal mobilisation to find out how much influence on mobility, pain and function this treatment can have. We hope to improve the quality of life of patients with axial Spondyloarthritis.

We are aiming to recruit 70 participants to this trial (35 in the intervention group and 35 in the control group).

The intervention group will receive manual mobilisation physiotherapy on their spine, a hands on treatment using the Maitland concept, in 13 half hour sessions. Spinal mobility meassurements and other outcome measurements are taken at regular intervals. The trial will take place at the University of Bath and the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath.
